It's worse than we thought. We see the evidence of climate change everywhere we look, but did you know that 90% of global warming happens in the world's oceans? Scientists have measured the surface temperature of our ocean; it has been increasing -- much faster than previously estimated. We can't afford to elect politicians who refuse to accept and act on climate change. Will you commit to vote for climate change action this November?

This was in my emails this morning; I could have just as easily posted it on my Animal Welfare or Human Rights page but it's also appropriate for this page.

World Wildlife Fund ecomments@wwfus.org via mta-poolc2.cluster2.convio.net

Dear Martha,

Last week, World Wildlife Fund released the 2014 Living Planet Report. The report is always a must read update on the state of the planet, but this edition is especially important for anyone who cares about biodiversity. The top line message is that vertebrate populations around the world have declined by an average of 52% between 1970 and 2010. The situation is even worse if we look at the tropics, with an 83% species decline in Latin America. These are sobering statistics for me, and I'm sure for you as well. Why are we seeing these alarming trends? Simply put, they are a consequence of the growing demands of the human population. More people are clearing forests, plowing grasslands, polluting waters, and emptying the oceans. This is not just a problem for wildlife. It's a problem for you and me, too. Instead of living sustainably within our ecological means, we are borrowing from our future to pay for our present. Every year we take more natural resources than we took the year before. When my colleagues and I reflect on our conservation work, we see hope in WWF’s past accomplishments to protect the world’s most important places like the Amazon and iconic species. Just this past year, Nepal celebrated 365 days without a single poaching incident of tigers, rhinos or elephants. In fact, the country's tiger population increased by 63% between 2009 and 2013.

Tell the EPA: Put Our Health First, End
Mountaintop Removal Coal Mining!

Right now, there are dozens of pending permits for new mountaintop removal coal mines in Appalachia. If these new mines get approved, it will mean more people get sick and more mountains get destroyed. It's important to let the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) know we're tired of seeing families get sick from mining pollution and tired of seeing our mountains vanish.

Tell EPA Administrator Gina McCarthy to put the health of our communities first and end mountaintop removal coal mining!

Stand with RAN as we demand the fashion industry address the growing global threat to forests, animals and Indigenous communities of dissolving pulp.  Rainforests are destroyed to create a huge array of products, including rayon, viscose, and other textiles. These products are complicit in the resulting deforestation and human rights abuses.

Fashion companies must take action to eliminate deforestation, human rights abuses, and species loss from their supply chains. RAN is taking on some of the biggest brands and asking them to get rainforest destruction, land grabbing and climate change Out of Fashion. With your help we know we can make a tremendous impact for the forests.

Take action now, and tell fashion companies the you want forest-friendly fabric.

Free 79-Year-Old Anti-War Activist Margaretta D'Arcy!

79-year-old human rights and peace activist Margaretta D’Arcy was recently jailed for taking part in an anti-war protest at Shannon airport in October 2012. D'Arcy was sentenced to three months in prison for refusing to sign a bond agreeing that she would not return to the airport.

Shannon Airport is one of Ireland's primary airports, and it has a history of foreign military use -- mostly, American military stopovers. As of Nov. 2008, 1.2 million troops have passed through Shannon since the beginning of the Iraq War.

Margaretta and fellow activist Niall Farrell, members of Galway Alliance Against War, went onto Shannon's runway on Oct. 7th 2012 to protest U.S. military drone strikes and western intervention in Syria. It's believed U.S. drones go through Shannon via the US Hercules C-130′s that land there, despite claims that these aircraft are unarmed.

Margaretta is currently being treated for cancer, but she has always been steadfast in her determination to stop war. Please sign and share this petition to free her!
